This tool re-encodes a JPEG as a PNG. PNG uses lossless compression, so no new artefacts are introduced, and the result supports an alpha channel if you later add transparency. Note that a PNG of a photograph is usually larger than the JPEG it came from, because photographs compress better with JPEG.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting to PNG improve the quality?
No. Converting cannot recover detail that JPEG already discarded. It simply stops any further quality loss from happening on future saves, because PNG is lossless.
Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?
JPEG is designed for photographs and compresses them very efficiently by discarding detail. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so for a photo it is normal for the PNG to be several times larger.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPEG has no transparency, so the PNG will be fully opaque. You can add transparency afterwards with an editor or the Crop to Circle / Round Corners tools.
Can I convert many JPGs at once?
This tool converts one image at a time. For batches, run each file through in turn, or use the Bulk Image Compressor which handles multiple files.
